Boukje helped me to pinpoint what exactly it is that I’m trying to achieve with my Dutch studies, speaking and understanding spoken language in my case, and then shaped the lessons in a way that I was getting a lot of practice with that. Being a very experienced language teacher, Boukje not only explains the language very well, but she also tries to make lessons interesting for the student so that the student does not lose interest or burn out. Another thing I enjoy a lot as well is her trying to bring language learners together. She organized a reading club for a couple of other students of my level and I, where we read books in Dutch and then discuss it with each other.

New to the Netherlands and Utrecht, my weekly one-to-one lessons with Boukje were a highlight! I hoped for and expected professionalism and a good teacher. I absolutely got that – but also warmth, friendliness, a sense of humour and a willingness to engage on every subject under the sun!
Boukje not only took my personal interests into account when designing my lessons (a discussion on the criminal justice system of the Netherlands anyone?), but also my knowledge of Afrikaans as a second language: speeding up when my familiarity with Afrikaans made learning Dutch easier, and slowing down when my familiarity with Afrikaans made learning Dutch so much more confusing and challenging! I cannot recommend Boukje highly enough.

The lessons with her have always been fine-tuned to my needs and included very valuable information about the Dutch culture – I enjoyed every second.

If I had known about her earlier, I would have skipped the group lessons I took when I arrived in NL and went for private lessons with Boukje right away.

Voor ik mijn lessen begon, begreep ik bijna niks van de taal. Nu kan ik het meeste goed verstaan. Ik bel in het Nederlands; ik schrijf e-mails in het Nederlands; en ik kijk Nederlandse tv.
Boukje heeft een programma voor mij op maat gemaakt. Ik heb Duits op school geleerd en dus weet ik een beetje van de grammatica. Boukje heeft deze informatie gebruikt om het programma goed aan mijn behoeftes aan te passen. We hebben snel de dingetjes die ik al wist besproken en toen heeft ze langzaam het nieuwe materiaal aan mij uitgelegd. Ook heeft ze goed opgemerkt wat voor vocabulaire ik nodig heb. Ik ben een econoom en ik zou termen uit dit vakgebied moeten kunnen gebruiken. Boukje heeft ze van elk thema dat we bespreken goed uitgelegd en meer focus daarop gelegd.
Ik vind het heel belangrijk dat ik kan oefenen in een atmosfeer, waar ik het gezellig vind en ik heb geen angst om foutjes te maken. Boukje heeft mij daarin voorzien en ik ben heel blij dat ik elke week naar haar les ben gegaan! Ze motiveert me om meer te leren en ik doe graag elke week mijn huiswerk!
